Pieces of Mourning

A reflection of my conscious and unconscious personal, familial, and ancestral memories processed through emotion, intuition, and vision.

Pieces of Mourning was included in the group exhibition, Memories of Tomorrow’s Sunrise at the Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery, Cal State LA from June 8 - July 15, 2022.

Curated by Jason Jenn and Vojislav Radovanović with Mika Cho.

Anita Getzler’s “Pieces of Mourning” is direct about its heartbreaking memorial for genocide and imprisonment. There are crushed rose petals and broken rose thorns in small jars, thorny branches wrapped in bronze wire, memorial yahrzeit candle holders containing old watches – like those taken from Holocaust victims – with the faces of the watches holding more crushed petals. Getzler also includes a scroll featuring some of the names of those sent to concentration camps [from France]. As a memoir of stories told to the artist by her parents, who were themselves holocaust survivors, it is deeply moving. As a work of art, it is a stunning mix of dark textures illuminated with the flickering glow of the brass wires, an electric yahrzeit lamp, and a spirit of love. ~ Genie Davis, Art Critic

DNA: Does Not Apply, 1976

Silkscreened copper enamel The triptych is my interpretation of the three-dimensional helix structure of DNA—a self-replicating material that stores hereditary information within a cell and is the carrier of this information from generation to generation. Every single living organism on the planet has DNA.

Genocide, murder, enslavement, and discrimination have historically been perpetrated against peoples because of what is determined to be their race, religion, skin-color, etc.—their genetic inheritance.DNA: Does Not Apply is my protest to this violence against humanity.

Pieces of Mourning, 2022

Printer’s drawer, glass vials, rose petals, rose branches, brass wire, thread, seagull feathers, seashells, men’s watches.

Yahrzeit, 2022

Wooden box, yahrzeit memorial candles, electric yahrzeit lamp, women’s watches, rose petals, satin fabric, rose branches, brass wire.

Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word meaning the anniversary of a loved one’s death. Jews observe yahrzeit at home by lighting a 24-hour burning candle in memory of the deceased.

The book, Mémorial de la Déportation des Juifs de France (Memorial of the Deportation of the Jews of France) by Serge Klarsfeld lists the names of more than 80,000 Jews deported from France to concentration camps or killed in France.

I chose four pages from this book to print as a satin scroll. They include the names of my two uncles, EMILE KAMPF and ISAAC KAMPF; the grandfather of one of my close friends, OSCAR ZAIDMANN; and the artist CHARLOTTE SALOMON (listed as CHARLOTTE NAGLER, her married name).

Vial of Thorns, 2022

Glass vial, rose thorns, thread, wood, oil pastel and charcoal on archival print, brocade fabric.
